A New Zealand born songwriter, singer, and musician, Shayne P. Carter is best known for leading Straitjacket Fits from 1986–1994, and as the only permanent member of Dimmer (1995–2012). Shayne P. Carter was our first artist-in-residency. His two-month program at Bangkok 1899 was dedicated to the exploration of merging modern pop music with Thai traditional music, highlighting the aspect of Bangkok 1899 as a cultural hub that creates relationships and social engagement through art.
During his time at Bangkok 1899, Carter collaborated with Morlam musician Piyanart “Pump” Jotikasthira (of Studio Lam and The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band) along with the rhythm section of Toomturn Molam Group, and Chiang Mai based sound artist Arnont Nongyao. At the end of his residency, Shayne and his Thai collaborators performed in the soft opening event of Bangkok 1899. Carter's residency lasted from December 16, 2018 to February 17, 2019.
